Hooray for Crumb Quilts

Now you know what I have been doing for the past couple of weeks.

Yes, working on a crumb quilt with my red, white, and blue scraps.

I have saved the scraps from every patriotic quilt or project I have made over the past few years. Now I'm ironing, pinning, sewing, cutting and enjoying every minute of it! I do love sewing with red, white, and blue fabrics. It gives me a good feeling about patriotism!

Most of my sewing has been at night this month with yard work consuming by daylight hours. I did get a nice surprise when I was dead heading my roses the other day.

I have about six blocks finished and think I may get five or six more by the time I'm done. If you aren't a quilter, you may be wondering what a crumb quilt might be, if so, here's a short definition:

Basically, it’s sewing small pieces of fabric together to make new fabric which can be cut up to make blocks, borders, sashing and more. source

So, I've been sewing every small bit and piece of these fabrics together then cutting the blocks into 12-inch squares. Here are four of the finished blocks.

I'm thinking about how to put the blocks together. Since it is my very first crumb quilt, I need your advice.

  • Should I add sashing between the blocks?
  • If so, what color should the sashing be?
  • Should I use corner stones?
  • Color of corner stones?
  • No sashing?
  • How about borders and binding?
I would love to hear your thoughts - Judy.

Patriotic Throw Ready for Quilting

I am thankful that I have my patriotic throw pieced and ready for me to quilt. The borders and stars were sewn on tonight.

I hung it at the top of my stairs on the landing just to get these pics. My goal has been to have a seasonal quilt hung for each season. As you can see, I am really cutting it close with this one.

Hopefully, I can take it down tomorrow, make my sandwich and start quilting.

Blooms in my gardens this week

I love when my flowers are blooming, it makes me happy and brings me peace in these troubling times. Look closely at the purple coneflowers in the second row. There is a beautiful swallowtail butterfly doing his job.

I have noticed Japanese Beetles on some of my flowers and rose bushes the past few days. I have sprayed some of my flowers but want to let the pollinators work.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

Patriotic Throw Progress

A little progress has been made on my patriotic throw. I am piecing the star blocks together now and have a couple done to share.

There are 14 stars that will go around the Robert Kaufman panel. I still have 12 stars to get done but thankfully the flying geese are all made so it is just a matter of sewing the stars together and the time to get it done.

Below is a cross stitch patriotic design that was a gift from a friend a number of years ago. I recently sent her a pic to see if she remembered it. She said she did and now says her vision isn't as good and is unable to do cross stitch. I am thankful I have this gift from her.

Blooming on my porch this week:

Finishing Up a Patriotic Throw and A Class

I've been trying to finish up a throw for my daughter's birthday. I'm always drawn to patriotic pieces and thought this would be perfect on the back of her white couch.

The panel is " Colors of Freedom" by Wilmington Prints.

Wanting the panel larger for a throw, I added 15.5 blocks to the sides of the panel.

The repeating stripe from the fabric line made a quick wide border for the top and bottom of the quilt.

I had the top all pieced in time for her birthday on the 15th but didn't have it quilted. (Bad when you have to give a gift that isn't finished and need to bring it back home to finish it up).

I took a class at Calico Country in Paducah, KY, called "Edge to Edge Quilting on Your Embroidery Machine where you are quilting in the hoop. It was a fun class and I wanted to use this technique on this quilt.

The book is by Amelie Scott Designs and has several expansion packs.

Now that the quilting is done, I'm finishing up the binding today and should gift it again tomorrow.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

Working on A Patriotic Throw

I have the 20 blocks done on my Wonky Star Quilt but decided to start another new project on Friday. Thinking I better start on something patriotic to have it ready for the 4th of July, I found a picture on Pinterest of a throw that appealed to me. I'm considering taking out the 4 squares in the center of the star and using one piece of fabric. What would you do with the center of the star?

So here's my take of the patriotic throw.

I saw a picture of a similar throw and it said the size is about 40 x 60. So from those measurements, I have been piecing my project. The star is similar to the "Wonky Star" quilt I have been working on. This made it a littler easier in making the star on this patriotic throw. Hopefully, they don't look wonky.  There are four smaller stars with one in each corner.

Later today, I finished two stars for the bottom of the throw.

Still have to piece the top corner stars plus a narrow red border and a wider blue border. I'm hoping to finish it in the next few days.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.
