December Quilting Projects

Hi Everyone and Merry Christmas! I hope you have almost all of your quilting projects are done for Christmas! I have had a busy month sewing and quilting for my family and tornado victims in Western Kentucky. 

Here are my December projects:

A Jellyroll Snowflake quilt was pieced in blues and white. I started this project a year ago and for some reason, it was put aside and only needed about 40 minutes of work to finish it.

I finished piecing the quilt and quilted it in the hoop on my Solaris.  I showed the quilt at our December quilting guild meeting. 

Another project presented at our December meeting was a charity quilt I made for the Tornado Victims in Western Kentucky. Our guild is sending several quilts for this tragedy. 

Mayfield, Kentucky is located about 24 miles from our house in Murray. My husband and I had driven through Mayfield on Friday evening, December 10 at 8 pm and drove through the square area and past the courthouse. We talked about how beautiful the courthouse area looked with Christmas decorations and lights. Sadly by 10 pm that evening it was destroyed. I took these photos on Sunday. So sad! There has been a tremendous outpouring of help for Mayfield and the other quad state towns hit by the tornado.  It is simply unbelievable; everywhere I turned my head, it was destroyed. 

I just read on Facebook that Hancock's Fabric of Paducah has received 1,893 donations of quilts, blankets and throws for those impacted by the tornadoes. Many individuals and quilt guilds are helping. I could keep talking about the destruction and the need of so many and the generosity of others.

Thankfully, our home was not affected by the path of the tornado, but all of our surrounding area was without electricity and phone service for several days. Luckily, we have a fireplace and a gas stove. We were able to keep our house warm and food cooked. I'll stop now . . .

This week, I finished a Christmas gift of 8 quilted placemats.

The placemats started as a panel. 

Then they were cut apart and piping was added using the Baby Lock Pearl and Piping Foot seen in the pic below.

Borders were added and a knife-edge finish was used so binding wouldn't be needed.

Nested Churn - Fall Quilt

In late August, I bought Moda Basic Grey Grunge fabric in lots of fall colors. I loved the fabric and knew I wanted to make a fall quilt. (the last fabric on the right is Moda but not grunge)

You can see, I paid $9.99 a yard for the fabric at my local quilt shop here in Murray, KY.

But as usual, I hadn't decided on a pattern to use. 

I searched through my patterns but still no decision. Next I took to Pinterest to take a look at fall quilts. Then I found a fall quilt that gave me inspiration.

Oh, a churn quilt! I had a churn pattern that I was planning to use for a patriotic quilt in red, white and blue that I had seen on A Quilting Life's web site.

I had previously bought the pattern by Jane Davidson . . .

and thought I could use her pattern with the fall fabrics I had just purchased.  At last I had a plan!!!

The blocks were 24 inch with a total of 16 blocks to make a king size quilt 102 x 102.

The piecing was not hard but still took me three hours per block with all the trimming of each of the four nested churns in each block. 

I did use design boards as I cut my fabric out. My board weren't quite finished and had no binding on them but they worked for me. I'll add the binding on the boards soon.

My next dilemma was I had a time frame to complete my quilt. I don't like time frames for my sewing but  knew I was leaving for vacation on October 2 and wanted to have my quilt done and to my long arm quilter before I left. I must have been crazy to plan to make a king size quilt in a little less than 30 days! I sewed day and night to get this quilt done!

Do you put pressure on yourself to complete projects?

The 16 blocks had sashing between the blocks and rows. There were also corner stones added. 

You can see in the collage below: my blocks, sewing the rows together and one of my design boards. 

I am lucky to have a friend who is a retired art teacher and who is great with color. As I was laying the rows out to add the sashing, I would send her pictures and ask about the color plan of the row. She kindly looked at the pic below and said I needed to change them because I had three colors from the same family in one row. Look at the biggest churn in each block and you can see what she was talking about. 

After her advice,  I used a color wheel to help in planning the blocks and sewing the blocks together.

I finished piecing the quilt one day ahead of schedule and rushed it off to my long arm quilter. I felt relief to have it done! Then off to Florida for some fun with my husband and grandsons on their Fall Break. The beach, the pool, putt-putt golf, we had so much fun and made lots of memories! 

I received the quilt back  on October 11 and begin sewing the binding on my quilt the next day. I always use a walking foot when sewing the binding. Less stress on my hands and wrists!

I couldn't wait to finish the binding and try it on my bed. Take a look!

I know it is pretty bright but I am happy.

A Charity Quilt, A New Quilt Ladder and a Quick Peek

 I have sewing full steam ahead to get a charity quilt finished for our local quilt guild meeting this week. Scraps from a previous quilt were used for this project but I did have to purchase a piece of fabric for the backing. 

 

 

Over the weekend, I went to a craft fair at the Paris Landing State Park in Paris, Tennessee and found a quilting ladder to display a few quilts. It was just what I needed to add to my quilting room relocation. (more on my room relocation later) 

I'll give you a peek at another September quilting project I have going on this month. I have finished six of the 16 blocks which are 24.5 inches unfinished.

I am hoping to get this quilt done by the end of September if I can get in tons of sewing time.

August Quilts

When August arrives, it is usually too  hot  for me to work in the yard very much. I have soaker hoses run where I need them to water. With my watering taken care of, I return to my sewing room and get back to quilting.

My August projects:

My projects include a charity quilt made from some pinwheels left over from another project. It didn't take long to whip this quilt together. I had two columns of the pinwheels done so only needed to make a few more. This was an easy project plus it used up some of my scraps. The quilt will be donated as a veteran's quilt, Our local guild will present mine as well as  with many other veteran quilts on Veteran's Day to the veterans in a local nursing home. 

Another August quilt project was a pincushion made for a gift to a friend. This pincushion was my first attempt at paper piecing. Thought I should try something small for my first paper piecing project.

For my final project for August, I made a wall hanging for fall. 

The pattern is called Pumpkin Season by The Pattern Basket. I'm not happy with my quilting and will most likely pick some of it out. Why didn't I think to use clear thread in my bobbin when quilting!! Guess I'll spend some more time with Jack.

Super Nova Table Topper

 If you saw my post last week, you saw that I have been working on a few "green" projects in honor of St. Patrick's Day.  This week, another "green" project is complete for March. 

Several green fabrics were in my stash so this would be a perfect project to use them.

I saw a Super Nova full size quilt a couple years ago and knew I wanted to make one some day. Instead of a full size quilt, I knew a table topper or wall hanging would make be happy.

I didn't have a pattern but the picture was all half square triangles. 

I used the "Halving It" method to make my HST and made 8 HSTs at once. What a time saver!

My Bloc-Loc rules worked perfect to square up the HSTs. 

Since I used the Super Nova as a table topper, I'm setting a table for St. Patrick's Day.

The napkins were made a couple years ago from some of the same fabric.

Leprechaun Throw

 It's March and time to bring out the green! I've had several projects with green going  and have one to share. 

I bought this panel a year or so ago then misplaced it. How it got in with Halloween projects is beyond me, but there is was in that container  of projects waiting to be completed.  Glad I found it just in time to get it ready for March.

I really just wanted to add a couple of borders, quilt it, and get it hung at the top of my stairs.

I try to hang a different quilt each month on the landing.  Another "green" project is coming soon.
